Acrylic dentures
These are the ‘traditional’ type of plastic denture. They are held in by suction and may have metallic clasps to engage teeth to help hold them in.
Advantages
- Cost effective
- Aesthetic
- Easy to add to/repair
Disadvantages
- Bulky
- Do not conduct heat
- Need a lot of coverage
Flexible Dentures
This type of denture is becoming more common. They are very case specific and the flexibility in the material allows it to engage slight undercuts and ‘grip’ teeth to create a more rigid fit.
Advantages
- Good retention
- Thin
- Strong
- Can be unilateral to replace small spaces
Disadvantages
- Difficult to add to
- Can place pressure on compromised teeth
- Need excellent hygiene and healthy remaining teeth
Cobalt Chrome Dentures
This type of denture has acrylic on a cobalt chrome frame. The result is a rigid, well fitting denture with great cosmetics. The denture can be planned along with crowns or small adjustments to your teeth to result in a precision fit denture with a superb fit. The metalwork is hidden from the smile, so you need not worry about it being visible.
Advantages
- Good retention
- Thin
- Strong
- Do not need a lot of coverage
- More hygienic
Disadvantages
- Requires planning
- Higher lab processing fees
